I always wanted to take a picture of a Muslim girl wearing a scarf. But, I never had the courage to ask because I didn’t want to offend anyone. On Wednesday, September 1, 2010, however, I was walking in the IUPUI Campus Center when I saw Sairah Safdar. Sairah, a Pakistani, was promoting a dinner sponsored by the IUPUI Muslim Student Association. As fellow photographer and J-school friend, Mike Wolanin and I were walking towards the desk, she looked up and asked Mike if he wanted to know about the dinner. I saw this as my chance and I said, “We’ll go if you let me take a picture of you.” She said yes. Like a photographer taught by Jim W. Brown, I ended up taking like 50 photos. And out of all those, this was the best. I took it with my EOS 1D Mark II. I used a f/1.4 50mm lens. I shot it at f/1.6 at 1/1000 sec.
